The Memphis International Airport Police Department's Training Division is committed to providing state-of-the-art training in order to prepare the Department for all types of situations, as well as ensuring all state-mandated training is accomplished in a timely fashion. The dedicated training staff accomplishes this by keeping abreast of the current training resources available in the law enforcement community. The training staff recognizes the importance of quality training and is continually striving to ensure that the officers have the knowledge and training to perform their service to the Airport community in a professional and safe manner.

The Memphis International Airport Police Department's Field Training Officer (F.T.O.) program is responsible for the field training of new officers to the department.  The F.T.O. program was established in 1995. Presently there are six F.T.O.'s. The experience level of the officers working as F.T.O.s range from two to nineteen years as police officers at the airport. Each F.T.O. must stay up to date on the latest in procedural and policy changes with the department. The F.T.O. will complete a twelve-week training course with each new recruit. The trainee will work with three different F.T.O.'s on three different shifts during this time. Each day the F.T.O. will complete a Daily Observation Report on the trainee detailing strengths, weakness and any remedial time needed.

The Airport Police Department has six Firearm Instructors who oversee the on-sight firing range. The instructors ensure that all the officers are qualified and proficient in the use of their firearms. The Instructors continually trained the officers in the latest defensive techniques. The Department strives to provide the best firearm training possible for its officers.

The Airport Police In-Service training is State mandated, which require all Officers to complete 40 hours of training each year. The training must meet the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (P.O.S.T.) Standards in order for the department to maintain its certification. Airport Police In-Service training is taught by Officers in the department who are state certified and P.O.S.T. approved. They have also attended Instructor Development School to improve their skills as an instructor.
