The Investigative Unit investigates all crimes that occur within the jurisdiction of the Airport, from the least serious to the most serious. The Investigators are also required to perform crime scene investigations such as recording the crime scene photographically, processing the scene for evidence, latent prints, and recording the investigative events as they occur. The Unit maintains the property and evidence submitted by all officers of the department, and ensures the chain of custody is maintained. The Investigative Unit obtains all the criminal warrants for the department. The Investigators present felony criminal cases to the Grand Jury of Shelby County for indictment. Interviewing suspects, witnesses and victims is another duty of the Investigative Unit. The Unit is responsible for performing thorough background investigations on new potential employees for the Police Department.  The Unit does the follow-up investigations on all crimes after the initial reports are taken. The Unit is responsible for the Internal Affairs Investigation of the Department as well as any Special investigations assigned. Intelligence and organized crime functions are the responsible of the Unit. The Investigative Unit is the liaison between Federal, State, Local, and County law enforcement agencies. The Unit is on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
