The Memphis Int'l Airport Police Honor Guard was established 1998, because of the untimely death of Lt. David Rushing. Previously we did not have any police officers to die while serving. When Lt. Rushing passed, the department looked for a way to honor him, and in the future, other officers if needed. Out of that need came the Airport Police Honor Guard Unit. The Unit consists of 10 highly trained and polished officers from the department. In order to be an Honor Guard member the officer must display discipline, marching skills, and must keep his uniform in top shape at all times.

The members of this elite unit must go through rigorous training in drill and ceremony. Since the inception of the Airport Police Honor Guard Unit, the unit has received high praise from other Police and Fire agencies in the area.

The Honor Guard helps other agencies in the area to give officers and firefighters a dignified last rights; when an officer or firefighter dies in the line of duty, this provides some closure for the families whom have lost their loved ones.
The Airport Police Honor Guard also participates in local events such as Law enforcement week, and the Fire Department's 911 remembrance day. The Honor Guard Unit has also been used as a color guard unit for many events.

In summary, the Airport Police Honor Guard Unit has been providing service for all heroes whom have served their country or community and made the highest sacrifice to make our communities safer.
