New Control Tower at Memphis International Officially Dedicated

On Thursday, October 20, the new Control Tower at Memphis International was officially dedicated during a ceremony hosted by Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority Chairman Arnold Perl, and featuring dignitaries and guests from the national, state and local levels. The dedication completes a project that began with ground breaking ceremonies in January 2008.

Federal Aviation Administration administrator Randy Babbitt praised the project and called it “an incredible, state-of-the-art, high-tech, leading-edge tower.”

“This tower is a symbol of the FAA’s commitment to aviation safety and modernization of the air traffic control system,” said Babbitt. “Our future success depends on keeping our airport infrastructure healthy and investing in NextGen so we can make air travel more efficient, dependable and even safer.” more

Memphis Liberty Air Traffic Control Team Honored For Heroic Role in 9/11

As a part of the dedication of the new Control Tower at Memphis International, it seemed only fitting to not only recognize the remarkable structure, but to honor the people that make it work. It was on September 11, 2001; just over 10 years ago, that terrorism sent our nation’s aviation into emergency mode. When the unthinkable happened, some 350,000 people were in the sky over US airspace, and Memphis FAA personnel took a leadership role. At the new tower opening, this group of heroes was honored with a proclamation designating them as the Memphis Liberty Air Traffic Control Team, presented by Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority Chairman Arnold Perl to Federal Aviation Administration Administrator Randy Babbitt. The proclamation will forever be prominently displayed in the terminal connector between concourses B and C across from the Delta Sky Club at Memphis International. more »

FAA Installs ASDE-X at Memphis International

With the installation of the Airport Surface Detection Equipment – Model X (ASDE-X) at Memphis International, the FAA has completed its rollout schedule for the nation’s top 35 airports, dramatically improving runway safety for the traveling public. This advanced runway safety tool enables air traffic controllers to detect potential runway conflicts by providing detailed coverage of movement on runways and taxiways.

Among the sources feeding into ASDE-X are radar, sensors from the satellite-based surveillance system called Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast, multilateration sensors and aircraft transponders. All of this data is then fused and projected onto color displays that allow controllers to see the precise location of aircraft and transponder-equipped vehicles on runways, taxiways and approach corridors, as well as aircraft flying within five miles of the airport. The identity of each aircraft and vehicle is even provided by the transponders.

The equipment is particularly valuable to controllers when visibility is poor at night or in bad weather. Potential issues are identified and then communicated through both visual and audible alerts.

35 airports feature ASDE-X technology.

Delta Expanding In-flight Entertainment Options

Delta Air Lines launched new in-flight entertainment options for customers in early October as part of its $2 billion investment in the flying experience. The additions include Delta Connect, a new in-flight portal that will be available exclusively to all customers using Wi-Fi on Delta aircraft; wireless movies and television on demand on Boeing 757-300 aircraft; and a more user-friendly design for Airbus A330 in-flight entertainment systems that include more content choices.

"Customer demand is evolving every day and Delta is ahead of the game, delivering on customer preferences as it relates to technology and innovation," said Bob Kupbens, Delta's vice president – eCommerce. "Whether through our mobile apps, Wi-Fi on soon to be more than 800 aircraft or a more comprehensive and customer-friendly experience, Delta is delivering." more »
