Scholarships Propel Airport Art Competition to Higher Altitude
Winners in the Airport’s 4th annual Memphis City and Shelby County high school student visual art competition received much more than ribbons for their creative efforts. A generous $600 in combined monetary rewards (donated by WesPac Pipelines-Memphis) accompanied the ribbons given to the first, second, third place and honorable mention winners. Then, an unexpected $50,000 in scholarships from Memphis College of Art raised this year’s exhibition to its highest level ever.
A $10,000 scholarship for each of five students selected in a separate judging by Memphis College of Art will allow these budding artists to pursue their artistic educational goals. These one-year scholarships have the potential of being extended up to four years if the students meet certain criteria each year. This could make it a $40,000 scholarship for each of them.
Additionally, Bob Boorom, Regional V.P. of HMS-Host Corporation announced that they intend to work with the schools to provide a $1,000 scholarship next year and he plans to challenge other Airport concessionaires to do the same.
Vice President of Properties & Business Development Richard White’s vision of a program that would let local young people publicly express pride in their hometown thru art has become a glowing reality that many never imagined. Since its inception it has involved about 1,000 local students and displayed to a global audience the depth of talent and caliber of creativity in Memphis’ youth. All 45 works in the exhibition are on display in the airport’s passenger walkways that connect concourses A, B and C.
