Memphis International Gives World War II Veterans Star-Spangled Sendoff

The wishes of 26 local World War II veterans ages 83-90 came true on Friday, October 3 when they flew from Memphis International Airport to Washington, DC to visit the WWII Memorial. The trip was organized by Forever Young Senior Wish Organization whose mission is to honor senior citizens by helping them fulfill their dreams and give them hope for the future.

The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority, Delta Air Lines and the Transportation Security Administration organized a festive atmosphere at the Airport including the Navy Band from Naval Support Activity Mid-South performing military anthems on the upper concourse, bunting on the rails, airport workers waving flags and a color guard of motorcyclists flanking an entry to Terminal B’s security checkpoint.

Forever Young raised approximately $20,000 to send the veterans on the three-day trip. The veterans’ itinerary included the WWII Memorial, Capitol Hill, the White House and the George Washington home, Mount Vernon.
