Memphis International Airport Notes

New St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Exhibit

Visitors to the Danny Thomas Terminal (Terminal B) at Memphis International Airport will be able to learn more about the remarkable work of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital thanks to a new exhibit which was unveiled on June 12.

The display highlights several of the research concepts on which St. Jude Children's Research Hospital focuses. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude Children's Research Hospital freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay.

"Memphis International Airport is vital to the citizens of this Region as evidenced by the $28.6 billion annual economic impact, more than any single airport in America. But it's more than just the numbers," said Arnold Perl, Chairman, Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. "The story of Memphis International is also a story about St. Jude Children's Hospital. Because of Memphis' passenger connecting hub, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital can more readily facilitate the movement of patients, their parents, physicians and scientists from all over the world. In short, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital needs worldwide access and connectivity and that's exactly what is provided by Memphis International Airport."

Scott Blake from Design 500 was responsible for the display's design. He deliberately created a display that mirrors the architectural design of the airport terminal while expressing the child-centered character of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The glass and steel piers that flank the exhibit mirror the structural columns that rise to the geometric umbrella ceiling of the terminal. A dawn scene with patients and the words "no child should die in the dawn of life" is situated on the side facing the Terminal's entrance. Below the scene are panels describing the hospital's founder, treatment, research and fundraising. The opposite side features an aerial night photograph of the St. Jude campus and photos of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital researchers and physicians with the text "welcome to Memphis."
