Tennessee Air National Guard Dedicates New Facilities

The 164th Airlift Wing of the Tennessee Air National Guard dedicated its new $245 million facility on September 6. The new facility is one of the most technically and physically advanced Air National Guard Bases in the country. The dedication was the culmination of one of the largest Air National Guard projects in history.

The 118-acre facility is constructed on the southeast corner of the airport. The move from the 103-acre base at the airport's north end was made possible by a historic land exchange agreement between the Air National Guard, FedEx and the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. The new base will enhance the Memphis Air Guard's mission with the 250-foot long, 65-foot tall, 222-foot wingspan, intercontinental transport Lockheed C-5 Galaxy aircraft. The C-5 is about 30 percent larger than the C-141 Starlifter aircraft operated by the 164th Airlift Wing until 2004.

The new 550,000 square-foot facility has been specifically designed to support C-5 operations. Twenty-eight acres of 14-inch thick pavement will be used to park the giant aircraft, largest plane in the Air Force fleet. Three massive hangars for the Galaxy encompass 320,000 square feet, more than half of the six-building area of the entire base. The facility efficiently uses land space by utilizing composite facilities; incorporates sustainable design and is highly energy efficient; and has an expansion capability to handle 12 C-5 aircraft. The base also is the most advanced Air National Guard installation, incorporating the latest antiterrorism/force protection features. The base's fire suppression system can cover 90 percent of a C-5 with foam in just 60 seconds.
