Delta Adds Flights for Memphis

Only a few short weeks after Delta and Northwest merged, Memphis International Airport is already seeing an increase in Delta flights. Delta has announced new flights to Salt Lake City, Utah starting January 5, 2009; JFK, New York, starting in April, 2009.The airline also announced two Northwest flights to McAllen, Texas, starting March 2, 2009 and to Lubbock, Texas, starting April 6, 2009

The new JFK service will provide Memphians with additional connectivity to international flights. The ultimate goal for Memphis is to handle additional international routes.

In March, Delta will begin replacing select regional jet flights between Memphis and Atlanta with larger mainline aircraft.

New Family Travel Security Lane Makes Holiday Travel Even Easier

Memphis International Airport is sharing peace and goodwill this holiday season with its own version of a nationwide green lane – a dedicated lane for families or passengers who need extra assistance while going through security. The goal of the new green lane is to give more time to those passengers who need it, while freeing up the other lanes for more experienced travelers.

Families can find the lane at the Concourse B checkpoint. It is marked by a sign featuring a small green circle. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has the capabilities to add an additional family friendly lane in both Concourse A and Course C checkpoints. Memphis International will see an increase in traffic over the busy holiday season and the green lane will help keep inexperienced or occasional travelers moving through security.

Spring Arts in the Airport Schedule

This spring, air passengers will continue to experience soothing classical music through live performances by Memphis Symphony Orchestra woodwind and string quartets.

The next concert will take place on January 9 and is sponsored by Pickering Firm. These mini concerts will take place from 12:45 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the passenger connector and in the southeast corner of concourse B. The airport will host concerts on February 27, March 20 and May 1.

It’s December Already?

Construction is proceeding on Air Traffic Control Tower

Anyone visiting Memphis International will see the new air traffic control tower starting to rise out of the ground. The foundational structure of the tower extends 68’ below ground level. It begins with 256, 18” diameter auger cast piles that are 45’ deep. These are topped with an 8’ thick concrete cap covering the tops of the piles using nearly 1,000 cubic yards of concrete. The 34’ base of the tower shaft begins 15’4” below ground level and at present only 18’8” is visible above ground. When completed it will be 335.83’ tall to the top of the antennas on the tower.

It will be the third-tallest air traffic control tower in the South. The new control tower will be commissioned in 2011.
