New Ground Transportation Center To Be Built at Airport

Plans are moving forward to build a Ground Transportation Center on 78 acres at Winchester Rd. and Airways Blvd. to house rental car companies, hotel shuttle buses and potentially even transportation to some of the city's famous attractions.

The consolidation of the current rental facilities to the new center will enable the Airport to provide better customer service for passengers, decrease emissions, reduce 80 percent of the bus traffic at the airport terminal and cut in half the travel time from baggage claim to the rental car lots. Passengers will be transported to the Ground Transportation Center on a "common bus system."

To help finance the $48 million facility, the six rental car firms serving the Airport will be charged a $4 per-transaction fee.

The new facility will take approximately 40 months to build. The MSCAA plans to have bids in on construction by the end of the summer. The goal is to complete the facility by 2011.
