Memphis International Airport Receives Two Industry Accolades for Cargo

Memphis International Airport is still flying high above the rest when cargo is involved. The Airports Council International (ACI), Geneva, ranked Memphis International Airport as the world's number one airport for cargo for the 14th consecutive year. According to preliminary rankings released by ACI, Memphis International Airport handled 3,598,500 tons of cargo during 2005, slightly more than the 3.55 million handled during 2004.

Memphis maintained its lead over Hong Kong, which handled 3,437,050 tons during 2005. Other U.S. airports in the top 10 for cargo include Anchorage, number three; Los Angeles, number seven; and Louisville, number 10.

Memphis International Airport was also named the top performer in its category among North American airports in an air cargo excellence survey conducted by Air Cargo World Magazine. Airports were placed into three categories based on annual tonnage: Over 1 million tons annually; 500,000-999,000 tons and under 499,000 tons. Memphis airport received an overall score of 109 based on performance, value, facilities and regulatory operations. Ratings for each company were presented as an indexed score, relative to the average to allow for easy comparisons. A score greater than 100 represents above average performance, a score below 100 represents a below average performance.

"Everyone at Memphis International Airport is proud of these two accolades," said Larry Cox, president and CEO of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. "This kind of performance year after year is the result of teamwork between everyone at the airport and our partnership with the world's best cargo airline, FedEx."
